She is the child of Harvey Welker, a Native American father, as well as Julie Welker, an African American mother. Her mother is an agent in real estate while her father is a graduate in engineering. Walker was educated through The Germantown Friends School (Germantown Region) in Philadelphia where she graduated in 1994. In 1998, she graduated with a bachelor's of arts diploma at Harvard College. Welker has been married for over 20 years with John Hughes who is a famous marketing director at Merck Philadelphia. John and Sheila are parents to two children.
